Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India’s per capita carbon emissions are less than half the global average and asserted that India is the only G20 nation to have fulfilled its Paris COP-21 commitments ahead of schedule.Inaugurating an international conference on environment and climate in the national capital, Modi said developing countries had often been unfairly blamed for carbon emissions and highlighted India’s environmental progress over the past 12 years. “Over the past 12 years, India has made extraordinary progress in every field related to the environment,” he said.

Modi said per capita carbon emissions in developed countries were six times higher than in India and that New Delhi had consistently highlighted this fact on global platforms.

“India is working with the rest of the world and is setting new standards for environmental protection. This is the power of new India. Non-fossil fuels, solar energy capacity, stoppage on carbon emissions… India’s performance on all such metrics is being discussed across the world,” he said.
