Tirupati laddu row: Key Supreme Court hearing on independent investigation plea today
On hearing the plea of the alleged use of animal fat in making Tirupati laddus, the Supreme Court reconstitutes Special Investigation Team (SIT) to include CBI in the case.
The Supreme Court substitutes the Special Investigation Team constituted by the Andhra Pradesh government with an independent agency of two CBI officers, two Andhra Pradesh State Police officers and a representative of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to investigate the allegations of use of contaminated ghee in Tirupathi laddu prasadam.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta tells SC that if there is any element of truth, it is unacceptable. Devotees are spread all over the world. Food safety is also involved. There is no problem with the SIT. They are competent. SIT may be supervised by a senior police officer from the Centre. Somebody senior to the SIT members.
