Sudha Murty opens up about gender equality: ‘Men and women are equal but…’

Recently, renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murty, a Rajya Sabha MP, shared an insightful video about gender equality. She emphasised the distinct yet complementary roles that men and women play in society with her perceptive analysis. Sudha Murty, who is well-known for her charitable work, posted a video in which she discussed her opinions on gender equality. She likened men and women to the two wheels of a bicycle, emphasizing that both are essential for progress.

‘In my view, men and women are equal but in different ways. They complement each other like two wheels of a bicycle; you can't move forward without the other,’ Sudha Murty wrote in a video posted on X.  Her video began with a contemplative question, ‘What is equality? You should define it first.’ She went on to say that, while men and women are different, they are equal in their own ways and complement one another. Using the analogy of a bicycle, she emphasised that society cannot progress unless both men and women contribute.

Sudha Murty also compared life to a cart or a bicycle, stating that it has two wheels – one representing the male gender and the other, the female gender. Her video garnered significant attention, with nearly 6,200 views and around 346 likes. It sparked a range of reactions and comments from viewers, showcasing the diverse perspectives on her views about gender equality.
