OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is expected to visit India on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, as reported by news agency PTI. The purpose of the visit is to meet with senior government officials and participate in an industry fireside chat.

This will be Altman’s second trip to India in two years and comes amid a lawsuit filed by news agency ANI, which alleges that OpenAI used its content to train AI models without providing compensation. OpenAI, however, has maintained that it only uses publicly available data and has argued that Indian courts lack jurisdiction over the matter.

The visit also coincides with a shift in the AI landscape, where the emergence of the low-cost Chinese AI startup DeepSeek is challenging the dominance of OpenAI and other leading Western AI models. DeepSeek’s R1 model, which reportedly cost less than $6 million to develop and uses a fraction of the power required by models like ChatGPT, has made significant waves. The AI industry, which had been pouring billions of dollars into AI technology, was taken by surprise as DeepSeek’s R1 model outperformed ChatGPT, even becoming the top-ranked free app on Apple’s App Store.
