Karnataka Cabinet decides to withdraw controversial Parks Bill amid criticism

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday decided to withdraw the contentious Karnataka Government Parks (Preservation) (Amendment) Act, 2026 by means of an ordinance, following backlash from citizens and Opposition parties.

The Parks Bill, passed by the legislature in the Monsoon session, had amended the 1975 Act that governs lung spaces including Cubbon Park and Lalbagh, allowing 5 per cent park land for public purpose.

"The Bill will be reintroduced in the next full-fledged session after modifications based on suggestions. The bill was discussed in the legislature. The protesting Opposition did not participate in the debate, but only politicised the issue and misled the people," said deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, who briefed reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
