Sale of onion at a subsidised rate to the public through the fair price shops began in the district on Friday.
One kg of big onion is sold at ₹35 to the ration card holders. It is being marketed through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Ltd (NCCE).
A senior official of the department told The Hindu that the sale had been launched to stablish the onion prices in the open market. It was part of the market intervention initiative. It was expected that the move would bring down the prices in the market.
