On the occasion of the 118th birth anniversary of former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, the services of the social reformer were remembered by many people across SPSR Nellore, Tirupati, Prakasam and Kadapa districts on Saturday.
Nellore District Collector O. Anand said, “Babu Jagjivan Ram had overcome many insults and difficulties in his life. He fought for social justice in the country and worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the weaker sections. All of us should take him as a role model to achieve our rights.” The Collector added that efforts are being made for the upliftment of SCs and STs in the district.
In another event, Nellore Superintendent of Police (SP) G. Krishnakanth paid floral tributes to Jagjivan Ram and lauded him as a great visionary who had put an end to untouchability in the country and united all the people. “Jagjivan Ram is the father of Meira Kumar, the first woman Speaker of Lok Sabha. He was a beacon of hope for the people. He was a great statesman and administrator. People very affectionately used to call him Babuji,” the SP said.
