A day after three men were arrested for assaulting two non-vegetarian food sellers at a recent Gita recital event in Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed solidarity with the victims and said the BJP’s “dictatorship” will not work in Bengal.

Addressing a public event in Nadia on Thursday, the CM said, “A poor hawker was selling his food at your gathering like all other food sellers. He did not think to discriminate between veg and non-veg food, and you beat him up. Now we have arrested all of them who assaulted the poor man. This is Bengal, this is not U.P. that you will use threats and dictatorship here.”

She expressed solidarity with the assaulted men and promised strict action against the accused.

The Kolkata police have arrested three men – Soumik Golder (23), Swarnendu Chakraborty (32) and Tarun Bhattacharya (51) – on Wednesday night in connection with the assault. The accused were produced before the Bankshall court and all of them were released on bail.
