Supreme Court directs Assam Human Rights Commission to probe allegations of police encounters

The Supreme Court has directed the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) to investigate 171 alleged fake encounters by Assam police in 2021. While dismissing a PIL, the court noted the petitioner's claims appeared speculative, except for a few incidents. AHRC will invite victims and families to provide evidence and can select police officials for inquiry.
