The year was 2022. Rishab Shetty's 'Kantara' took over the screens. The Kannada film became a sleeper hit, transcending borders and winning awards and accolades. The spooky scream of warrior demon Guliga reverberated in theatres and in people's ears long after they left.

Three years later, Rishab Shetty is set to take us back into the world of 'Kantara'.

Ahead of the release of 'Kantara: Chapter 1', here's a recap of the first film.

'Kantara' traces back to 1847, when a powerful king, despite possessing money, power and jewellery, wishes for something more - inner peace. He goes in search of peace and this search leads him into a tribal forest, where he encounters the Panjurli Daiva, a local deity worshipped by indigenous tribes.

In exchange for peace, the king makes a pact: he grants the forest land to the tribal people forever. The tribes express their happiness. But, they also pose an ultimatum: if the pact is destroyed, it will invoke the deity's wrath.
