India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the first Test against South Africa after suffering a neck injury on Day 2 at Eden Gardens. Gill was taken to hospital for further examination after the close of play on Saturday and is currently under observation. The BCCI confirmed that he will take no further part in the match and will continue to be monitored by its medical team.
Gill walked in to bat immediately after the drinks break, moments after Simon Harmer had removed Washington Sundar. Facing the off-spinner from round the wicket, Gill defended the first ball he encountered before attempting a slog sweep off the next delivery. Although he struck it cleanly for four, he appeared in visible discomfort soon after completing the shot. He clutched the back of his neck and struggled to move his head freely, prompting the physio to rush in.
Following a brief assessment, Gill retired hurt and made his way back to the pavilion, with Rishabh Pant replacing him. He did not return to bat for the remainder of India's first innings, which wound up at 189 for 9, giving the hosts a slender 30-run lead. The BCCI added that his condition will continue to be evaluated through Saturday as the medical staff monitor his recovery.
