'Not integral to Islam': HC junks UP girl's plea for allowing hijab in school

The court was hearing a petition filed by a minor girl studying at a private school in Prayagraj. The student had completed high school and wanted to enrol in Class XI at the same institution.

Through her mother, she approached the High Court seeking directions to the school to allow her to wear a headscarf along with the prescribed uniform. The petition argued that wearing a headscarf was an essential part of Islamic practice and that the student had been wearing one at the same school since Class VI.

A two-judge bench comprising Justices JJ Munir and Indrajit Shukla dismissed the petition, holding that an individual student cannot alter the uniform prescribed by an educational institution according to personal preference, reported NDTV.
