Amid heightened criticism and attacks from the opposition on the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has come up with a scheme to woo women voters.

The Bihar government has announced a 35% reservation for women candidates who are original residents of the state in all direct recruitment for government services and all types of posts.

The move is a tweak of the July 2016 order, where 35 per cent reservation in state government jobs was open to all women. Women have traditionally supported Nitish Kumar, especially his decision of “Sharabbandi" or alcohol ban. The latest decision is meant to cement the support of this vote bank further ahead of this year’s assembly elections.
