A sweeping new elevated stretch outside the capital is poised to redraw daily travel routines across the region, promising relief from the grinding congestion that has long plagued commuters.
In a significant pre-launch move, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has opened a 31-kilometre elevated section of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway for trial runs. The corridor, which arcs from the Eastern Peripheral Expressway near Baghpat to Akshardham, is expected to fully open by December-end. Officials said that this single link could ease movement not just for those heading out of the city, but also for lakhs of residents in its eastern neighbourhoods.
For years, motorists heading towards the Uttar Pradesh border, bound for Saharanpur, Haridwar, Dehradun or even Chandigarh, were funnelled through East Delhi’s congested internal roads. Peak hours often meant hour-long crawls, with morning rush spilling into the early afternoon and evening traffic extending late into the night.
