The district and city unit of the Congress paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, Minister for Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology S. Boseraju described Indira Gandhi as a symbol of strength, who laid the foundation for women’s active participation in Indian politics.

Mr. Boseraju said that at a time when issues regarding women’s freedom posed serious challenges, India Gandhi not only led the Congress, but became the Prime Minister of the country. Her leadership and tenure as the Prime Minister is a milestone in the political history of the country, the Minister stated. Her assassination on this day in 1984 remains one of the darkest days of the nation, Mr. Boseraju added.
