The 2025 Formula 1 season is heading towards a blockbuster finish as the championship reaches its final stop at the Yas Marina Circuit. With three drivers still in mathematical contention—Lando Norris, Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri—the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix promises a title fight of rare intensity. A season packed with turning points, strategic gambles and breakthrough performances now narrows to 58 decisive laps under the floodlights.
For McLaren, this is the closest they’ve come to the title in over a decade. Norris has built his campaign on remarkable consistency, while Piastri has evolved into a formidable challenger, matching his teammate punch for punch. Verstappen, however, remains the most seasoned contender in title deciders. Despite an uneven year, his experience and race management make him a dangerous presence at the front.
Qualifying offered the perfect prelude to Sunday’s drama. Verstappen exploded to pole with a blistering 1:22.207, pulling clear of both McLarens in the final runs of Q3. Oscar Piastri was sharp early in qualifying, and George Russell topped Q2, but Verstappen saved his best for last—capped by his radio reaction: “That was insane.” It was his eighth pole of the season, setting up an electric three-way championship showdown.
