Cameron Green rewrote IPL auction history on a dramatic evening, emerging as the most expensive overseas player ever after a tense, twisting bidding war at the IPL 2026 auction. The Australia all-rounder was roped in for Rs 25.20 crore by three-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders after a bidding war with Chennai Super Kings.
The moment Green’s name was called out as the third lot of the day, the room crackled with anticipation. Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians were the first to lock horns, an unexpected turn considering most observers had tipped Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings to go hard early, armed with the two biggest remaining purses. KKR entered the auction with a hefty Rs 64.30 crore and 13 slots to fill as they looked to rebuild after a turbulent season, while CSK had Rs 43.40 crore at their disposal.
KKR joined the bidding at a modest Rs 2.80 crore, as expected, before the contest quickly narrowed to a direct duel between KKR and Rajasthan Royals. As the price surged past Rs 10 crore with Rajasthan holding the paddle, CSK remained conspicuously quiet, sticking to their philosophy of backing specific skill sets over marquee price tags.
