Vijay Sethupathi is in the news as his upcoming film, 'Merry Christmas', is all set for a grand release in theatres on January 12. In an interaction with Bollywood Hungama, he revealed that he was heartbroken when Ranveer Singh's 'Gully Boy' was chosen over his film, 'Super Deluxe', as India's official entry for Oscars 2020. He claimed that there was some politics in choosing the film.

Vijay Sethupathi's 'Super Deluxe', directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, was in contention for India's official Oscar entry. However, it lost to Ranveer Singh and Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy'.

In an interaction with fans, Vijay Sethupathi acknowledged that he was 'heartbroken' when 'Gully Boy' was chosen over 'Super Deluxe' for Oscars 2020. He said, "It's politics. It's not because I was in that film. Even if I am not in that film, I wanted it to go there [Oscars]. Something happened in between and I don't want to talk about that. It's unnecessary."
