The United Arab Emirates planned to use its role as host of the COP28 – the UN climate talks – as an opportunity to sign oil and gas deals with over 15 nations, the BBC said in a report.

The UN body told the news agency that the hosts are expected to act unbiased and in ways that are devoid of self-interest. The BBC said in its report that the UAE team did not deny using COP28 meetings for business talks. “Private meetings are private,” the team was quoted as saying by the BBC.

The team said that the work focuses on “meaningful climate action”.

The documents accessed by the news agency showed that the UAE team prepared “talking points” to boost the interests of ADNOC, a state-owned oil firm. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is headed by COP president-designate Sultan Ahmed al-Jaber.
