Officer on poll duty in Jammu and Kashmir seeks FIR against Army personnel for assault

Srinagar: A Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) on election duty has sought for an FIR to be lodged against some Army personnel for manhandling and resorting to violence against him and his officials while they were on duty for Lok Sabha elections. Dooru SDM Ghulam Rasool Wani has alleged that they were obstructed from performing their official duties.

The alleged assault took place on the Srinagar-Qazigund stretch of the National Highway in Dalwach area.

Wani, also the Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) in South Kashmir for the elections, told a leading daily, “I was going towards Vessu because the District Magistrate was waiting there… They (Army) had halted traffic on the highway…We passed three checkpoints, but at the fourth place, a soldier asked us to stop. Suddenly, a few Army personnel targeted our vehicle. First, they beat up my driver and then they beat us all.”
