A major earthquake struck the coast of Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka peninsula on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning for the area. Till now, there are no reports of injuries or damage. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred 128 kilometers (80 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the region’s capital, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).
The local branch of Russia’s state geophysical service estimated a lower magnitude of 7.4 and reported a minimum of five aftershocks. Meanwhile, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center raised a warning for the possible for dangerous waves along nearby coastlines.
