US President Donald Trump on Monday said he has accepted an invitation from Chinese PresidentPresidentPresident Xi Jinping to visit Beijing in April. The announcement followed what Trump called a very good phone conversation with Xi. The US President said he also invited the Chinese leader for a state visit to Washington later next year.
The diplomatic exchange came nearly a month after Trump and Xi held in-person talks in South Korea. Trump said they reviewed a wide range of issues, including the war in Ukraine, fentanyl trafficking and Chinese purchases of American soybeans. He suggested that both sides had made significant progress in keeping recent agreements on track. It signals a rare calm in a partnership better known for rivalry.
While the White House has not released further details on the upcoming trip, Trump said both sides agreed it was important to stay in regular contact, something he said he welcomes.
