Supreme Court stays Allahabad HC order directing Noida DM to pay Rs 5 lakh in Delhi University student detention case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed an Allahabad High Court order that directed Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Medha Roopam to pay Rs five lakh compensation from her salary over the detention of student activist Akriti Chaudhary under the National Security Act.

A bench of Justices Satish Chandra Sharma and N Kotiswar Singh stayed portions of the High Court order, which contained strong strictures against the officer and the direction for compensation.

“After hearing senior counsel for the parties, this court is of the opinion that till the matter is heard on merits, the operation of the impugned judgment, particularly, para nos. 27 to 33 shall remain stayed,” the order said.
