A three-storey chawl row tenement collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday night during heavy rain. Officials said at least six persons were killed and one person was injured. One more person was feared trapped under the debris. A rescue effort involving several agencies continued at the site.
The collapse happened at around 8.30 pm at Chawl No 5 in Janta Nagar. The chawl was located behind Hanuman Mandir in the Mandala locality, officials said. Preliminary information suggested two to three tenements in the structure gave way. The impact led to debris spreading into nearby areas.
Officials said teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, the BMC ward office, and 108 ambulance services started rescue work soon after the collapse. The operation continued through the night as workers searched the debris. A team from the National Disaster Response Force NDRF also reached the spot. Officials said the search focused on one person feared trapped.
