SC Judge Surya Kant Appointed As Next Chief Justice Of India, To Take Charge On Nov 24

The President on Thursday appointed Justice Surya Kant, the second senior Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from November 24, following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on November 23.

The development was confirmed by the Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, who posted, “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025."

As the 53rd CJI, Justice Kant will have a tenure till February 9, 2027.
