The new railway bridge in Pamban near Rameswaram is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 6, coinciding with the festival of Ram Navami, according to Southern Railway General Manager R.N. Singh.
The Pamban railway bridge is crucial for connecting Rameswaram island with the mainland of Tamil Nadu via Mandapam. The bridge had been in disrepair for over a century, leading to the suspension of train services since 2022.
Construction of the new bridge began in 2019, with an estimated cost of around Rs. 550 crore, and is now fully completed. Various phases of train operations were conducted, and the vertical suspension bridge was successfully tested by lifting and lowering it.
