President Droupadi Murmu To Confer National Teachers’ Award 2023 On 5 September, See List Of Winners
Every year on September 5, Teacher's Day is celebrated in India to mark the birth anniversary of former President Dr S Radhakrishnan.
Radhakrishnan was India's first vice president from 1952 to 1962 and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. He was reportedly asked by a group of friends during this time to have a big birthday celebration. Radhakrishnan is believed to have said, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, why don't we celebrate the day as a day for teachers." Since that time, India has recognised September 5 as Teacher's Day.
Dr Radhakrishnan was a philosophy professor at Calcutta University and Chennai's Presidency College. Later, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of both Banaras Hindu University and Andhra University (BHU). He was chosen as a fellow of the British Academy in 1939. In 1926, 1929, and 1930, he also worked as a lecturer at Manchester College in Oxford. He was named the University of Chicago's Haskell lecturer in Comparative Religion in 1930.
