Medical Bodies Back MP Doctor Arrested Over Cough Syrup Deaths, Demands Fair Probe

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has raised strong objections to the arrest of a doctor in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday (October 5, 2025) in the ongoing contaminated cough syrup case, where over 10 children under the age of five years have died in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Calling the arrest “an indiscriminate action against a doctor”, the IMA said this was a clear-cut case of a spurious drug, as defined in the Section 17 B of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

In a statement issued on Monday (October 6), the association said that the action against the doctor was a classic example of the legal illiteracy of officials, and the police.
