Madras HC dismisses Netflix’s plea to reject suit filed by Dhanush against Nayanthara
The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed Netflix’s application to reject Tamil superstar Dhanush’s copyright infringement lawsuit against actress Nayanthara. The case revolves around the alleged unauthorised use of footage from the 2015 Tamil film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in Netflix’s docu-drama Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale. Justice Abdul Quddhose also dismissed a separate application from Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, Netflix’s content management entity in India, which sought to revoke the court’s earlier approval for Wunderbar Films, Dhanush’s production company, to file the suit in Chennai. Los Gatos argued that the suit should be heard in Mumbai, as the company is based there. However, the judge ruled in favour of senior counsel P.S. Raman, stating that Los Gatos’ application lacked merit.
The court has set a further hearing for February 5 to consider interim relief requested by Wunderbar Films regarding the unauthorised use of the visuals in the docu-drama.
