Iran says downed US drone, fired at fighter jet after fresh strikes escalate tensions

Tensions between the United States and Iran have sharply escalated despite the ongoing ceasefire following weeks of military confrontation. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for shooting down a sophisticated American MQ-9 Reaper drone near the Persian Gulf, intensifying fears of renewed conflict in the region.

According to Iranian officials, the drone was allegedly conducting surveillance operations close to strategic waters near the Strait of Hormuz when it was targeted. The IRGC described the action as retaliation after reports that American forces killed four Iranian personnel during a recent military exchange near the same region.

Iran has further claimed that it has destroyed multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones in previous confrontations, though independent verification of these claims remains unavailable. The MQ-9 Reaper is considered one of the United States’ most advanced unmanned aerial systems. It can operate at altitudes of nearly 40,000 feet and remain airborne for up to 40 hours.
