Hasan Nawaz stars in Pakistan’s five-wicket win over West Indies in 1st ODI
Hasan Nawaz was the star of the show as the Pakistan batter scored an unbeaten 63 and stitched together a 104-run stand with Hussain Talat to help the visitors cross the line in the first ODI. Pakistan won the match by five wickets to take an early lead in the three-match series on Friday, August 8.
West Indies had put up 280 runs on the board, thanks to half-centuries from Evin Lewis, Shai Hope and Roston Chase, but the Pakistan spinners ensured that the hosts were restricted to a below-par total. Shaheen Shah Afridi (4 for 51) and Naseem Shah (3 for 55) mopped up the tail to restrict the West Indies. The chase from Pakistan was far from convincing as they struggled to pace the innings well.
Babar Azam (47) and Mohammad Rizwan (53) got good starts but both men failed to capitalise on them. Rizwan fell with 101 still needed and Pakistan in a spot of bother, before Nawaz stepped up, alongside Talat. Nawaz struggled early on, but was able to bounce back and ride on his luck to get the job done with seven balls to spare. Talat remained unbeaten on 41 from 37 balls.
