Music composer AR Rahman has responded to criticism regarding comments he made in an interview, expressing his continued devotion to India and clarifying the intention behind his words. The musician, at the centre of a public debate over perceived prejudice in Bollywood, shared a statement outlining his motivations. The statement was accompanied by footage of his song Maa Tujhe Salaam/Vande Mataram performed at a cricket match, underlining his cultural contributions.
In his video statement, Rahman described India as his inspiration and home, emphasising the unifying role music has played in his life. He stated, “Music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring our culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt.”
Rahman provided examples of his efforts to celebrate India's diversity through artistic projects. These include nurturing Jhalaa at the WAVES summit, participation in Rooh-e-Noor, and collaborations with young Naga musicians. He also referenced his creation of a string orchestra, mentoring the Sunshine orchestra, developing Secret Mountain, India's first multicultural virtual band, and his recent work on the score for Ramayana with Hans Zimmer.
