Fake, sexually explicit images of American megastar Taylor Swift likely generated by artificial intelligence spread rapidly across social media platforms this week, disturbing her fans. The deepfakes have once again reignited calls from lawmakers to protect women and crack down on the platforms and technology that spread such images.

One image of the singer was seen 47 million times on X, formerly known as Twitter before it was removed on Thursday. According to US media, the post was live on the platform for around 17 hours, reported news agency AFP.

Taylor Swift is reportedly "furious" that AI-generated nude images of her were circulating online and is also weighing possible legal action against the site responsible for generating the photos, according to a report published in The New York Post.
