The Delhi police on Wednesday started a door-to-door drive to identify Bangladesh residents staying in the city illegally. The drive was conducted in several areas in south-east Delhi, including Shaheen Bagh and Jamia Nagar, said an officer, adding that residents were asked to show their Aadhaar and voter cards.

“Some of the residents were identified as suspects. They may be sent to detention centres after the completion of the legal process,” the officer added.

The police action comes a day after Raj Niwas wrote to Chief Secretary Dharmendra and Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, asking them to launch a “special” two-month drive to identify and initiate “strict action” against illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
