Chaos at NIT Silchar as students clash with police after suicide in campus

A student's death by suicide at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar campus stirred protests by fellow students of the educational institute. The protests by students turned violent, prompting the intervention of the police, who resorted to lathi charges, injuring 40 people on the NIT campus in Assam.

Students, enraged by the death, vandalised several vehicles and the hostel property too, alleging that actions of the college forced the victim to take the extreme step.

The body of the deceased student, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, was found hanging in the hostel on Friday. The deceased was a third-year student residing in Hostel 7 of NIT and had been admitted to this NIT in 2020.
