India has had a turbulent history of conflict with its neighbour, Pakistan, since the partition of India in 1947. Both India and Pakistan have been engaged in multiple wars. The fragile peace between them has often been disrupted by terrorist attacks, ceasefire violations, and escalating rhetoric from both sides. Relations worsened significantly following high-profile incidents such as the Pahalgam attack.
Twenty-six civilians were killed in the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, after which India retaliated through precision strikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
The escalation in May is referred to as India’s Operation Sindoor, which came in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. India’s armed forces carried out strategic precision strikes on Pakistani military installations in May, following operations that targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
