306 killed, 49 missing in ethnic violence since May 2023: Manipur Home Minister tells Assembly

Supreme Court of India declares Bar Council of India (BCI) has no jurisdiction or power to initiate any disciplinary or punitive action against law students. Its disciplinary powers under the Advocates Act, 1961, are limited only to registered advocates. The order from the Supreme Court came in a petition filed by two former NALSAR graduates seeking legal action against the Bar Council of India and chairperson Manan Kumar Mishra for its aborted move to ban the professional enrolment of the 2026 batch students over their objection to have the CJI as chief guest for their convocation.

At least 306 people have been killed, and 49 are still missing in the ethnic violence that broke out in May 2023, Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam told the Assembly on Thursday (September 3, 2026).

The Supreme Court of India declined on Thursday (September 3, 2026) to intervene in a plea challenging restrictions put in place by Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan governments on entry to journalists, social media influencers and civil rights activists into government schools along with curbs on photography, videography, interviews, audio recording and livestreaming.
