“ I think there is a strong case for federalism. The Supreme Court in Bommai Vs Union of India, basically against Article 356 being misused, has held that secularism, federalism and democracy are part of the unamendable basic features of the Constitution, or basic structure of the Constitution. Whether those values are being respected is another matter. This is where I think the controversy lies and I would like to make a fervent plea to support the federal principles. India is too big, too diverse, too pluralistic, for anyone to rule by diktat from Delhi. The idea of one nation, one election, one everything, in a country which is multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic, multi-religious, and multicultural, is a recipe for disaster.
