TMC leader Babul Supriyo has reached the residence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to formally resign as a BJP MP. Babul Supriyo had recently switched sides to join the Trinamool Congress.

In a tweet, Babul Supriyo had earlier thanked Speaker Om Birla for granting him time at 11 am on Tuesday to formally resign as an MP. Babul Supriyo had said, "I will not hold on to the Berth/Perks/Salary of a MP now that I am no longer a part of BJP that I won the seat for."

After submitting his resignation, Babul Supriyo said on Tuesday, "My heart is heavy as I had begun my political career with BJP. I thank PM Modi, the party chief and Amit Shah. Confidence was shown in me. I had left politics wholeheartedly. I thought that if I am not a part of the party, I shouldn't keep the seat for myself," said Babul Supriyo.

Babul Supriyo had earlier resigned as the Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change in August. In a long Facebook post, he had announced his decision to quit politics. He had clarified that he would not join any other political party and continue to be a "team player".

Months after he announced his decision to entirely quit politics and saying he won't join any other political party, Babul Supriyo joined the TMC claiming that he was coming back for a great opportunity to serve Bengal.

Babul Supriyo was formally inducted into the TMC by the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien in September.
