Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday shared an important update about the company’s plans to start selling its electric cars in India. Musk’s statement indicates that it could take some time for Tesla to start selling its electric vehicles in the country.

“Still working through a lot of challenges with the government,” said Elon Musk after a Twitter user asked him for an update on Tesla’s entry into India. The world’s richest person’s statement indicates that Tesla is still negotiating terms with the government.

It may be noted that Elon Musk has been pushing for Tesla’s entry into India for the past few years, but his plans have hit a roadblock over high import duty and the requirement of a local factory.

GOVT NOT HAPPY WITH ELON MUSK’S STATEMENT

Soon after Elon Musk’s tweet, government sources rejected his claims and told Business Today that Elon Musk is trying to put pressure on the government through social media, adding that Tesla wants to reduce import duties on its cars without a commitment to produce locally.

The sources also said the government will not bow down to pressure tactics. They also added that India currently has a PLI scheme for automobiles, especially electric vehicles, under which Tesla will get benefits if they produce locally.

But it seems Tesla wants the government to reduce import duty so it can initially start selling CBU units in India.
