New Delhi: Calling Sanju Samson the ‘leading wicketkeeper batter’ in the Indian Premier League, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor backed the Rajasthan Royals skipper to be in the flight to USA and West Indies for the T20 World Cup that starts on June 1. With barely a week to go before the final submission of the teams to ICC for the mega event, Samson stands as one of the wicketkeeping options for India. Under his leadership, Rajasthan Royals are atop the IPL 2024 points table with seven wins.

It’s going to be tough for Samson as he has the likes of Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals), KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants), Dinesh Karthik (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Ishan Kishan (Mumbai Indians) as his competitors. This is also not the first time Tharoor publicly backed Samson for his inclusion in the Indian team.

“Delighted to agree with my fellow MP Harbhajan Singh on both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson. Have been arguing for years that Sanju has not had the selectoral breaks he deserved. Now he is the leading Keeper-batsman in the IPL but is still not discussed when the team is debated. Justice for Sanju!,” Tharoor posted while resharing a post from former India spinner Harbhajan on ‘X’

Going by his current form, Samson has scored 314 runs from eight matches including three fifties in IPL 2024 so far. He averages 62.80. With six games left to play in the group phase, the Rajasthan Royals opener only needs 48 runs to equal his tally from last season (362).
