Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday directed various ministries involved to resolve the issue of reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) within the All India Quota of seats at state-run medical colleges on priority. Prime Mininister Modi asked that the issue be settled out of court.

During a review meeting with the health and education ministers as well as officials from the ministries of education, health, law and social justice, Prime Minister Modi directed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to also implement reservations for the economically weaker section (EWS) in medical colleges.

A senior government source said, “Under current conditions, 15 per cent undergraduate and 50 per cent postgraduate seats in medical colleges run by state governments are earmarked as All India Quota. Unlike Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes who have reservations within this quota for admission, there is none for OBCs.”
