The Central Board of Secondary Education on Wednesday said that a question in a Class 12 sociology examination on the 2002 Gujarat riots was “inappropriate” and added that it will take strict action against those responsible for it, The Times of India reported.

The question was a part of the Term 1 examination for sociology on Wednesday.

“The unprecedented scale and spread of anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat in 2002 took place under which government?” the question read, according to The Times of India.

Large-scale communal violence had erupted in Gujarat in February and March 2002 after the burning of a passenger train coach in Godhra. Official figures say the riots resulted in the deaths of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus.
