Special Judge B H Loya's death: Two PILs seeking independent probe into death of the judge were posted in Court No 10

Medical Colleges scam: Two PILs were filed to probe "bribery" charges against judges in granting recognition to Medical Colleges in which the CBI had arrested former Orissa HC judge I M Quddusi.

Petitioners advocates Dushyant Dave and Prashant Bhushan sought the matter to be heard by Justice J Chelameswar-led bench as charges pertained to CJI. He agreed to hear the matter but the PIL was posted before court No 6 instead at his own court.

Next day, another PIL on the same issue was filed. Dave then convinced Justice Chelameswar to hear it urgently. He heard and ordered for setting up of a five-judge bench. Subsequently, the CJI set up a five-judge bench led by him to overturn the decision.

The five-judge bench declared CJI is the master of roster and no other judge could arrogate himself the power to assign the case. Both the PILs were later assigned to a three-judge bench, excluding dissenting four judges, and dismissed. The NGO was imposed Rs 25 lakh as cost.

Rakesh Asthana case: PIL challenging appointment of Gujarat-cadre IPS officer was posted before a bench led by Justice Ranjan Gogoi but as Justice Navin Sinha recused. It was again posted before a bench led by Justice R K Agrawal, who dismissed it.

Aadhaar case: Of the four seniormost judges, none was included in the bench to hear the crucial case, involving high-stake of the Union government. Justices Chelameswar and S A Bobde earlier heard the case.

Delhi Versus Union of India: The CJI-led five judge bench did not consist of any of the four seniormost judges.

The Babri Masjid Ram Janmabhoomi case: CJI-led three-judge bench criticised for speeding up hearing.

Allocation of cases related to former Andhra Pradesh CM Kalikho Pul's suicide and Sahara-Birla diary were questioned during tenure of then CJI J S Khehar.
