65th National Film Awards: Sridevi is the first to be honoured posthumously in the Best Actress category

Sridevi passed away on 24 February 2018, at the age of 54 in Dubai.

65th National Film Awards were announced today. Once again the Awards that we look forward to the most, did not disappoint. What came as a pleasant surprise was the Best Actress award. Late Sridevi was named as the Best Actress at the 65th National Film Awards. She has become the first actress in the history of National Film Awards to be given an award posthumously in that category. The honour has been given to her for her performance in the film, Mom, that released on July 7, 2017, also marking it as her 300th starring role in her career. Sridevi passed away on 24 February 2018, at the age of 54 in Dubai. She was in UAE to attend a relative's wedding and has stayed back for personal reasons after the functions. Her accident was ruled as 'accidental drowning' in the bathtub by the Dubai authorities. After an investigation, her mortal remains were brought back to India only on February 27 and were cremated on February 28 with state honours. Though Mom won't be Sridevi's final screen appearance. She has shot a very brief cameo for Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film Zero, which is due to release at the end of this year. Mom features Sridevi as Devki Sabarwal, as a biology teacher, who avenges her daughter's rape by blazing hell on the four perpetrators. Her acting was lauded by critics unanimously and also won Zee Cine Best Actress Award.

Apart from Sridevi, even Vinod Khanna was given an award posthumously. He has been awarded Dada Sahab Phalke Award. He is the second actor to be given the award posthumously after Prithviraj Kapoor.
