NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party chief
Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday disagreed with DMK chief MK Stalin's suggestion to make
Rahul Gandhi the prime ministerial candidate of anti-BJP front in the next
Lok Sabha elections.
"People are unhappy with the BJP. Telangana CM, Mamata ji and Sharad Pawar ji have attempted to bring together all leaders to form an alliance. If someone is giving his opinion, it isn't necessary that alliance has the same opinion," Akhilesh said when asked by reporters about Stalin's proposal.
Mamata Bannerjee's Trinamool Congress has already said that any unilateral announcement on
PM candidate could send out a wrong message.
A TMC leader had said on Monday that the decision on who should be the prime minister should only be taken following a discussion among the Opposition parties after the Lok Sabha election results were announced.
The CPI is also not in favour of projecting a prime ministerial candidate of the proposed anti-BJP front before the Lok Sabha polls, arguing that too many contenders might hurt electoral prospects.
"If somebody proposes, we can't do anything. We are not opposed to it," Communist Party of India general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy had said on Monday.
"We think...who should be prime minister...that should be discussed in post-election period instead of now...," he said when asked for his response on Stalin's remark.
On Sunday, DMK president M K Stalin proposed the name of Congress president Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate of such a grouping.
