The Supreme Court on Tuesday reserved its verdict on a petition seeking court-monitored fresh investigation into the murder of the then Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya in 2003.

A Bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra, during the hearing, questioned the petitioner, NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), for filing the petition when the top court was already seized of a criminal appeal on the same.

Senior advocate Shanti Bhushan, appearing for the NGO, argued that they had some fresh evidence in connection with the murder case which required investigation.

The Bench, however, asked why such material was not placed before the court, which was already hearing the criminal appeal.

“The court which is already dealing with the matter is better equipped,” the Bench remarked.
