Hoisting of the national flag and honouring of freedom fighters marked the 73rd Independence Day here on Thursday. Virudhunagar Collector A. Sivagnanam unfurled the tricolour at a function held at District Sports Stadium.
He inspected the guard of honour presented by the police and fire and rescue services personnel, National Cadet Corps, Home Guards and took the salute at a parade.
Several freedom fighters and their legal heirs were honoured with shawls. The Collector also distributed various assistance to the tune of ₹44.48 lakh to 127 beneficiaries on the occasion.
He presented certificates of appreciation to 223 government officials and employees for their meritorious services.
Over 1,000 students from various schools presented colourful cultural programmes.
Superintendent of Police M. Rajarajan, District Revenue Officer K. Udhayakumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police Shivaprasad, and various officials were present.
