'Brazen Indifference': INDIA Bloc MPs Urge Manipur Guv To Restore Peace, Slams PM Modi's 'Silence'

Opposition MPs, part of the INDIA bloc, have met the Manipur Governor today on day two of their visit to the strife-torn state and submitted a memorandum to her requesting her to restore peace.

On the second day of their visit to the crisis-hit Northeastern state of Manipur, the delegation of Opposition MPs of the INDIA alliance met Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal and submitted a memorandum to her, requesting her to restore peace and harmony in the state. Continuing their attack on the Modi government, the MPs questioned the 'Prime Minister's silence' in the memorandum which said "silence of Hon'ble Prime Minister shows his brazen indifference to the violence in Manipur'.

"You are also requested to apprise the Union Government of the complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur for the last 89 days so as to enable them to intervene in the precarious situation in Manipur to restore peace and normalcy," the memorandum read.

In a memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, the 21 opposition MPs who signed the document demanded urgent rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected people to bring peace and harmony to the state.

"From the reports of incessant firing and arson of houses in the last few days, it is established beyond doubt that the state machinery has completely failed to control the situation for the last almost three months," the memorandum read.

The continued internet ban for the last three months is aiding the unsubstantiated rumours, which is adding to the existing mistrust among the communities, the Parliamentarians said.

"We earnestly request you to restore peace and harmony taking all effective measures, where justice should be the cornerstone. In order to bring peace and harmony, rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected persons is most urgent," the MPs told the governor.

"You are also requested to apprise the Union government of the complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur for the last 89 days so as to enable them to intervene in the precarious situation in Manipur to restore peace and normalcy," they added.

The document also stressed that the "failure of both the central and state governments" to protect the lives and properties of the people of the two communities is apparent from the figures of more than 140 deaths (over 160 deaths as per official records), over 500 injuries, burning of more than 5,000 houses and internal displacement of over 60,000 people.

Talking about their two-day visit to the state, the Parliamentarians said in the memorandum that they visited relief camps at Churachandpur, Moirang and Imphal, and interacted with the victims and inmates taking shelter there.

"We are, indeed, very shocked and sad to hear the stories of anxieties, uncertainties, pains and sorrows of the individuals affected by the unprecedented violence unleashed by both sides since the beginning of the clashes," they added.

The memorandum highlighted that the condition in the relief camps is pathetic, to say the least, and special care needs to be taken for the kids on a priority basis.

"Students from different streams are facing uncertain future, which has to be the priority of the state and the Union governments," it added.

"Governor has suggested that everyone should work together to find out a solution to the Manipur situation. As soon as we get an opportunity, we will put pressure on the Central Govt at the Parliament and present the issues raised by the people and the deficiencies on the part of Central Govt & State Govt that we saw here. We appeal to the Govt of India to not delay, accept our No Confidence Motion and hold discussion over Manipur issue. The situation is worsening and it is raising national security concerns...," Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said after the meeting.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said, "We will meet the Governor and urge that she fix an accountability. Who is responsible for it? State Govt and Centre are pointing fingers at someone else but they are not accepting their own responsibility...INDIA alliance is here. Why are the PM, Defence Minister, EAM and Women & Child Development Minister missing from Manipur? Was the PM voted to power only for Govt inaugurations and making political speeches?..."

RJD MP Manoj Jha said, "We are going to request the Governor to restore peace in the state. We will handover a memorandum to the Governor."

MC MP Sushmita Dev said, "The situation is not good here (Manipur), we want to present a joint memorandum to the Governor and appeal to restore peace. We will ask the Governor to inform about the situation in the state to PM Modi and Union HM Amit Shah."

Meanwhile, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury attacked the Centre for the situation in the state and said, "The key point is that Manipur has been overlooked. As it was overlooked by the State Govt & Central Govt, the situation is worsening. Peace should be restored at the earliest, it is essential to maintain harmony and justice. We will demand that the Governor make all efforts to restore normalcy. It is the failure of the Government..."

The Opposition delegation includes Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, K Suresh and Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, TMC's Sushmita Dev, JMM's Mahua Maji, DMK's Kanimozhi, NCP's Mohammad Faizal, Jayant Chaudhary of RLD, Manoj Kumar Jha of RJD, NK Premachandran of RSP, T Thirumavalavan of VCK, JD(U) chief Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, Aneel Prasad Hegde of JD-U, CPI's Sandosh Kumar, CPI(M)'s AA Rahim, Samajwadi Party's Javed Ali Khan, IUML's E T Mohammed Basheer, AAP's Sushil Gupta, Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena-Uddhav Thackeray), D Ravikumar (DMK), and Phulo Devi Netam of Congress.
