Sec 144 Imposed In Leh Ahead Of Sonam Wangchuk's Border March On April 7

The objective of the march is to highlight the alleged Chinese incursions into grazing areas of Ladakh and to flag the ground realities in the ecologically fragile region.

New Delhi: Ladakh administration has imposed Section 144 in Leh district, restricting any processions, rallies or march. This comes just a few days ahead of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s planned ‘Pashmina March’ on the lines of Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March, on April 7 to the areas along the Line of Actual Control. The objective of the march is to highlight the alleged Chinese incursions into grazing areas of Ladakh which are used by Pashmini herders and to flag the ground realities in the ecologically fragile region.

“Reliable information suggests a potential breach of peace and public tranquillity in the district. Thus, to prevent any disturbances and ensure the safety of human life, Section 144 of the CrPC 1973 has been invoked,” the order issued by District Magistrate, Leh, read.

Earlier last week, Wangchuk called off his 'Climate fast' which demanded statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. However, he asserted that his fight would continue.

Speaking to news agency PTI, he said, “Today the first phase of the hunger strike has ended but it is not the end of the movement, it is a new beginning. Tomorrow new activities will begin, women will begin their hunger strike. We will continue (the protest) as long as we need to.”

After breaking his fast, the climate activist addressed a large gathering of supporters and praised the widespread support he got from across the nation, expressing gratitude for the solidarity shown towards Ladakh's aspirations.

Earlier, Wangchuk also issued a fresh appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the people of Ladakh to use their voting power judiciously in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Stressing the power of democracy, Wangchuk called the people of Ladakh to use their voting rights wisely in the interest of the nation. Referring to the upcoming polls, he noted the importance of citizen participation in shaping the future of the region.
